While Easter is still not yet upon us, I feel a compulsion to write a brief diatribe on my thoughts...
Why do we tell children about the Easter bunny? Ok, its not just about the Easter bunny its about all such nonsensical stories. Santa Claus, Tooth Fairy &c.
They are lies, all adults are aware of these lies, they are social fantasies that we tell children. They are not fundamental aspects (by this I mean scripture) of religious convictions such as the stories of Muhammad, Jesus, Buddha or the Flying Spaghetti Monster &c. (I wont get into that one here). Is this not stifling natural curiosity and thoughtfulness, surely in a civilised society the pursuit of critical thought should be encouraged. In all domains of inquiry.
They are claimed to promote social cohesion, good-will and appropriate moral values. However the education of children, and adults, to be mindful, respectful and to treat each other as uttermost equals should be an everyday phenomena. Not something dressed-up in a red coat; bunny ears; wings; or whatever nonsense, celebrated once every 365 days, or so, depending upon the moon cycles.
